Tip From the Archives
Lots of Green
Problem
You have lots of green to work with between you and the hole on your chip shot.
Cure
Try using a seven or an eight iron for extra roll.
Therapy
When you set up to the ball make sure you do not have your hands too far ahead of the ball. If you allow your hands to be just far enough ahead that the butt of the clubshaft is pointing slightly towards the target then you should get plenty of roll on the green. The ball should be a little behind center with your feet placed so they are more narrow than the width of your shoulders. Using a longer iron and a shorter swing length for your chip shot to help give you extra roll. So do not be afraid to place more weight on your front or lead leg so you can make an easier, descending blow on the golf ball. Try to keep your lower body still with the majority of the movement being controlled by your shoulders. Your hands should just ahead of the ball during the swing and try not to allow your arms to pass much further than your hips during the follow through.
