Tip From the Archives

Longer Swing

Problem

Your short iron shots are inconsistent in direction and distance.

Cure

When you take a short backswing and accelerate through the ball, make sure you keep a good tempo. If you forget your tempo, it will make it too easy for you to try to swing too hard during the downswing. This will cause you to hit at the ball instead of through it; resulting in inconsistent contact with the ball.

Therapy

Even though you are using a short iron, you still need to have a smooth and consistent rhythm. If you cannot seem to stop hitting at the ball, try using a shorter iron but use a longer swing length. Focus on moving through the ball and not at the ball. Notice that if you swing too fast and at the ball, you will get too high of a trajectory and not enough distance.
