Tip From the Archives

Long Divot Shot

Problem

Your ball landed in a divot in the middle of the fairway. You overshoot your target because you tried to dig the ball out of the divot or selected the incorrect club for the shot.

Cure

You need to select a more lofted club from this distance than you normally would. This is because the steep angle of attack needed to achieve this shot will greatly reduce the loft of the club.

Therapy

Try using a 7 wood if you are about 200 yards away from the pin. Due to the nature of the shot, it will provide you with the same distance as you would expect to achieve with your 5 wood. Set the ball towards the back of your stance. Keep your hands ahead of the ball throughout the swing. The swinging angle of should be steeper with a sharper blow than usual.
