Tip From the Archives

Long Bunker Shot

Problem

You face a long sand bunker shot.

Cure

Use your sand wedge if you are 45 feet or less away from the green. If you are about 50 feet away, select your pitching wedge or if you are even father away then a hybrid would be an ideal choice. Play this shot like you would on the fairway. Take practice swings in the grass outside of the bunker to help give you the proper feel and tempo needed to reach the hole.

Therapy

Square the clubhead and your body a little more towards the target than usual in a sandbunker. Swing along the target line and you should expect to see the ball fly further with less loft than you normally would with your sand or pitching wedge. Avoid trying to lift the ball out of the sand. Instead, swing firmly down and through the sand by allowing the clubhead to make initial contact with the sand about two inches behind the ball. Make sure accelerate your arms through contact you have a full follow though with a high finish.
