Tip From the Archives

Long Back Pin

Problem

You need to hit the ball over or from the fringe and are on the opposite side of the green from the pin.

Cure

To try to reduce the number of strokes by putting the ball over the fringe with an iron or a putter.

Therapy

Use a seven iron with a slightly faster putting stroke to get it over the fringe. Place the ball in the center of your stance then stand open; when you do, the ball will appear to be in the back of your stance. Use a five iron if the green has a deep valley or dip. Use your normal chipping stance with your hands well forward. Place the ball back in your stance and take a strong putt with it. You only want to lift the club about an inch off of the ground during your backswing and bring the club up about waist high during your follow through. If you use a putter, take a wider stance and lead the shaft forward, so the top of the clubface is closer to the target than the bottom. You will need longer swing to gain distance. However, because you are using a putter, you are more likely to come up short of the pin, get the putter head caught in the grass and change the angle of the clubface for a mis-hit.
