Long and High Shots with a Soft Landing

Problem

Topping the ball with wedges or you need your lob shot to fly high with a soft landing near the hole. When your grip is too strong, it will release the clubface and make the ball skid at impact.

Cure

Play the ball an inch forward with a slightly wider stance. You need to set your wrists early, weaken your grip with a slightly open clubface so the club moves under the ball at impact, and most importantly take a full swing.

Therapy

Play the ball forward with a slightly wider stance. Weaken your grip so that your left thumb is on top of the shaft or a little to the left and place the ball inside your forward heel. Set your wrists early so the club is vertical at the halfway point of your backswing. Take a slower but full swing, similar to one that you would with your driver. The club should be up and over your forward shoulder during your follow through. A good drill to help practice gaining loft is to place your head covers twenty five, fifty five, and eighty five yards away and try to hit as close as you can to them. Pull your back foot back to open your stance and play the ball back with your hands forward-pressed. Do not move your hands above your knee. You need to keep the club head to low to the ground until it is necessary to slightly hinge your wrists to bring the club up. Your body must rotate with the club as you hit through the ball.
