Loft on Slopes

Problem

You do not know which club to use on sloping lie and you still have a long shot to the pin.

Cure

Look at the hilly lie from an angle. Since you will need to align your hips with the slope, will the hill give you more or less loft? If you are swinging up a hill, you will gain loft. If you are swinging down a hill, you will lose loft. Once you have determined how the loft will change on the hill then select your club.

Therapy

Make sure you align your hips and shoulders to the slope. This will allow you to make flush contact with the ball. You will need a club with greater loft when hitting downhill, so try using a hybrid or a 5 wood. Since loft will not be an issue when hitting uphill, try using a 3 wood. If you were to use anything else, you might get too much loft and lose distance.
