Tip From the Archives

Locked Upper Body

Problem

You make poor contact because your hands, arms, and body do not swing together or you try to swing too fast.

Cure

Force your hands, arms, and shoulders to swing in sync with each other by swinging a club up against your chest. This will help lock your upper body together and prevent a backswing that is too fast.

Therapy

Take your normal stance and grip the club so that the end of the grip presses against the center of your chest. Swing the club so that your club, arms, chest, hips and shoulder move back in unison. Only take a half length swing, with the club going back and into the follow through halfway. Practice this swing several times whenever you feel that you are rolling your wrists away from the ball, your arms are swinging ahead of the club, or have lost rhythm due to swinging too hard during the backswing.
