Tip From the Archives
Line Drive Pitch or Chip
Problem
A skulled chip or pitch due to hitting the ball on the bottom of the club instead of the clubface. The clubface makes contact below the equator on the ball and causes a low line drive. Anxiety will cause you to want to look up too soon and cause poor contact with the ball.
Cure
You need to gain loft by taking a shallow swing and be sure to keep your head down.
Therapy
With a light grip, practice brushing the grass with the club head. As you brush the grass, focus on how the clubhead stays low to the ground and imagine how the center of the clubface will make contact with the ball. Keep your still and hit the ball. Don’t look up until you hear the ball hit the green.
