Tip From the Archives
Lay of the Land
Problem
You are playing at a new course and are unsure how the ball will land or roll on the greens.
Cure
Look to see where the clubhouse is compared to the location of the green. Many clubhouses are placed near the highest ground because it will get the best drainage and overall view of the course. You can expect the ball to roll away from the clubhouse.
Therapy
Carry an extra water bottle with you. Pour a little water on the green to see which way it moves. This will give you a good idea of how the ball will roll on the green. Even if you do not want to water the greens a little, you can always imagine how the water would drain on the green. Sometimes this is easier for people to picture than trying to figure out how the ball would roll if dropped onto the green.
Usually the folks in the pro shop and ranger at the first tee box knows the course pretty well. They also know about current speed of the greens, when they were last cut, perforated, sanded, etc.
