Tip From the Archives
Lag Angle
Problem
You want more distance without having to take a long backswing.
Cure
Try to create more width and leverage during your backswing to help produce a more powerful tee shot.
Therapy
Grip the club with your forward hand so that you can still see the first few knuckles with a lot of weight of the grip placed on your fingers. Set the middle and index finger of your trailing hand on the bottom side of the grip to help support the weight of the club. Make a backswing with your hands in this position. Stop the swing when your hands are about head high. By swinging mostly with your forward hand, it will help emphesize the loading of the club into your lead wrist. This wrist should be cocked back back with your lead thumb on the underside of the grip. At this stage of your swing you will want your forward arm creating a lot of width. If you do not feel the width, return to your starting position and try it again. Instead of moving the club down into the impact zone, keep the club up and simply practice pumping the club down a little while maintaining the width in your arms and the lag angle you created at the top of your backswing.
