Know Your Lie

Problem

You have a harder time making good contact with the ball while playing on the course than you do at the driving range.

Cure

Relax and play the clubs that you feel the most comfortable with. The mental aspect of the game can really take its toll on you while playing. When you are at the range, you can hit with each club whenever you feel like it and work out any errors. On the course you may feel overwhelmed because you do not know how you are hitting that particular day. So, practice before your round to you know which of these clubs you are hitting well.

Therapy

One big difference between the range and the course is the great variation in grass length, thickness, and type you will encounter while playing your round. This makes it very important to get a good feel for the grass with each shot. Take a couple of practice swings in similar grass near your ball to gain a better feel for the lie. This is especially true for the rough because you will need to know how bad the clubhead will slow down or turn in the longer, thicker grass.
