Jerky Takeaway

Problem

You have lost accuracy or speed due to a jerky backswing.

Cure

You might be placing a little weight on the club at set up, causing the clubhead to turn or drag along the ground during your backswing. Be sure when you set up to the ball that your weight is placed onto the balls of your feet.

Therapy

Try setting up to the ball without grounding the club. Address the ball as usual then lift the club so that the clubhead is just above the turf. Waggle the club to help ease the tension in your hands and arms due to setting up to the ball this way. Try to make a slow and smooth backswing.

I have heard variations of this remedy here and there over the last several months. In my opinion, it really doesn't matter which remedy you choose. The principal is sound, "eye up" your shot without letting your head touch the ground. If you're like me, you'll tend to drop your front shoulder in your swing which ultimately puts your head at the lowest possible point....the ground. I have actually started setting up my shot with my head a bit above the ball and have noticed much less grounding, and much straighter shots, from the tee my approach shots.
