Jerky Movements

Problem

You jerk the club due to excessive body movements while putting.

Cure

A lot of players assume that their unpredictable contact is due to the yips but for some players it is not due to jerking the club with their hands or arms but due to their whole body moving. Try having a friend watch you putt or video tape it to see which is causing the problem.

Therapy

Make a long putt but freeze your body during your follow through. Only allow your head and eyes to follow the ball until it rolls into the cup. Repeat this at least a dozen times before playing your next round. Many players get anxious about the end result of the putt and this causes them to move their whole body, almost as if they are ready to jump up and down in excitement or anger over the putt before they even finish the stroke. By pausing during your follow through, it will help change your focus, allow you to follow the ball from start to finish, and keep you from moving your body without affecting your putt.

The first inch of the putter backswing is vital. You must let the putter move back instead of pulling it back with muscle movement.
