Tip From the Archives

Index Finger

Problem

You need help getting the clubface square at impact.

Cure

Use the position of your index finger to remind you to make a full release so that the clubhead naturally becomes square at impact.

Therapy

Take a few practice swings. Notice how when you make a proper release that the forefinger on your trailing hand points down towards the ball and the tip this finger towards the target at impact. When this happens, the clubface should also be square to the target. Use the forefinger as a key thought to help make the clubface square and to complete a full release by focusing on trying to get the forefinger up soon after contact with the ball. Make sure that the clubhead is higher than your hands after impact.

I'm not sure I understand this one. I think I get that if I've released and rolled my hands over, that the tip of the finger points toward the ball (the ground?), but I'm not sure how it points at the target.

It is the way your fingers wrap around the grip. The longer bone in your index finger points towards the target while the tip of that finger points down towards the ball.
