Index Finger Drill
Problem
You do not feel like you can control the club as usual.
Cure
Once you feel that you have lost control of your swing, a downward spiral of self doubt can set in and the problem will escalate. Sometimes the easiest way to eliminate this problem is to purposely hit some bad shots. This can be more difficult than you think and will remind you of how it is a different feeling and swing from making a good shot.
Therapy
Notice the important role that index finger of your trailing hand has in making a bad shot. Most bad hits come off of this finger just before you make contact with the ball. For an ideal shot, you want very little pressure on your index finger at set up. Once you begin your swing, this finger will feel more pressure. Pay attention to the amount of pressure you feel at the beginning of your swing. You want to feel the same amount of pressure during your forward swing. To help emphasize this feeling, straighten your index finger along the shaft of the club.
Index Finger Drill
Problem
You want to improve your accuracy and consistency.
Cure
Work on maintaining the same amount of pressure placed on the index finger of your trailing hand during your forward swing as you have during the backswing. The reason for this is that the majority of swing flaws happen as the shaft lifts away from this finger.
Therapy
Set up to the ball as usual and you will notice that only a light amount of pressure is placed on the index finger of your trailing hand. As you take the club back, you will notice that more pressure is placed on this finger. Pay attention to this amount of pressure because this is what you want to feel as you approach the ball.
