Tip From the Archives

Impossible Bunkers

Problem

You are playing on a course with very deep or difficult sand bunkers.

Cure

As you are looking at the score card, plan on laying up as much as possible and do not even look in the direction of the bunkers. Sometimes simply staring at the trouble areas will imprint this location in your mind and that is where the ball will land. So block this section of the course out of your mind. Find the safe areas and only focus on them.

Therapy

If your ball lands in the bunker, do not overdo it by trying to hit the perfect shot onto the green. Simply focus on gaining enough loft to get the ball out of the sandpit, even if it means you need to hit out of a lower lip away from the target.

When I've found myself in a situation like that, I've declared an unplayable lie, taken a drop and a penalty, and played on. I probably saved myself 3 or 4 strokes trying to make an impossible shot.
