How to Use Your Fairway Woods on Par 5s

Problem

You feel like you are picking the club up in your backswing when hitting a fairway wood and then hitting down on the ball during impact.

Cure

You need to sweep the club head along the ground to create extension in your backswing.

Therapy

You need to create a stretching feeling from your left heel to your left armpit to help create the sense that you are setting up behind the ball at address and so you sweep the ground. Your hip and shoulder turn will lift it off the ground instead of your arms. Focus on bringing your left arm over your right shoulder during your backswing to help you swing the club around your body instead of bringing it straight up and down. Your clubface will center as you give a relaxed swing for a lofted ball flight. Keep sweeping the club along the ground until your body naturally lifts the club head during your forward swing.
