How to Initiate Your Backswing

Problem

Unable to gain momentum due to a poor path, plane, and tempo. If you focus too much on turning your torso without any wrist cock, it will cause you to swing outside of the target line. This can result in a push, pull, or even a snap hook. A very common problem results from not bringing your club and body back together so your wrists cock early, causing you to pull the club head too far inside at the beginning of the swing and possibly lead to a pull or a slice.

Cure

Synchronize your swing for a good path, arc and tempo for a smooth clubhead path. Your takeaway is where you begin a rhythmic motion, so remember to waggle first to help relax your muscles before you start your swing.

Therapy

To help prevent from pulling the club too far inside, you should place a club on the ground with the grip against the length of the outer part of your forward foot. Pick up another club as if you are starting your takeaway; just before the club is waist high, you should notice that the club in your hand should be parallel to the one on the ground. You need to practice proper momentum and learn to prevent picking the club up with your hands or over rotating your shoulders as you begin your swing. A good drill to achieve this is to start your swing with the clubhead about a foot in front of the ball. This will help allow your body to respond to the momentum of the club as it swings back. Take note how your body, arms and wrist feel as you do this and how much more difficult it is to over rotate your body or to pick the club up too soon.
