How to Hit a Ball While on Your Knees

Problem

You need to hit under trees or other obstacles and you do not want to take a penalty for an unplayable lie.

Cure

Be very weary of taking a club with too much loft or using one that is too long, using a 6 iron would be an ideal choice. Don’t expect too much from this shot, just plan on getting the ball out a further in the right direction rather than adding on a stroke without any gain.

Therapy

Get as comfortable as possible on your knees and choke down a few inches on the grip. Limit your wrist cock and keep your swing on a shallow plane or you will be likely to hit the obstacle above you. You will turn your torso and as you swing it should feel as if you are sweeping the ball off of the ground. Since you will be keeping the shaft of the club so close to the ground throughout the swing, it will be beneficial to have the clubface pointing slightly upwards to help provide enough loft to complete this shot. Remember, this is a difficult shot to attempt, so if you can, try to practice it a few times before resorting to using it on the course.
