How Hit a Two Iron

Problem

Trying to hit the two iron too hard resulting in poor contact. Some people also try to bend too much at the waist, causing a flatter swing arc and low ball flight.

Cure

Turn more with your shoulders and less at the hips. As you would with any long iron, be sure to accelerate through impact for better loft and power.

Therapy

Focus turning more with your arms and shoulders with a wider stance to help prevent your hips from turning. Since you will need a steeper swing arc from your arms, you must stand up straighter. The ball placement should be aligned just inside of the inside of your forward heel and armpit. Address the ball as you would when using 3 wood except you should stand two inches closer to the ball with your feet two to three inches closer together. Try to remember that the shorter the swing arc, the more control you will have. This will help reduce the amount of knee rotation and weight transfer. When at the top of your swing, stop the club before you would with a three wood and be sure not to allow your wrists to collapse. Try to keep the elbow on your trailing arm close to your body during your downswing and release your wrists while your body rotates.
