Tip From the Archives

Hold Your Finish

Problem

The ball keeps coming up short on your putts.

Cure

Pay attention to how you complete your stroke because it is very important to make a follow through in order to accelerate into impact.

Therapy

Practice putting the ball six feet away from the cup. Watch to see if you are stopping your stroke after contact, making a follow through or standing up immediately after contact. Be certain to complete your follow through by getting into the habit of holding the putter where you end the stroke, until the ball stops rolling. Too many players will putt and immediately pull the club back into their initial set up position as they watch the ball roll. Another common problem is standing up right after contact with the ball because of the perception that they are done playing the hole. Both problems will cause you to lose speed and come up short of the cup. So, concentrate on freezing your body into the finish position until the ball stops rolling.

An excellent summation. Watching the Pro's on the PGA Tour, it is almost a 'doddle' to guess which putts will make it and which won't. It has become a game with me. You should try it.If for instance they "peek" almost certain they will miss it.See how you go?
