Tip From the Archives
Hitting the 3 Wood Stinger
Problem
You are on a narrow fairway or it is very windy so you need to keep the ball lower.
Cure
This shot is achieved by using a longer club; the most common club used is a 2 iron and sometimes people even use a driver for this technique. You must turn your body much harder to help compensate for less of a weight shift.
Therapy
Tee the ball a little lower than usual. As you take a light grip, position your hands so they are an inch lower on the grip and be sure to place them so that they are hovering over the golf ball. Take a normal 3 wood stance, flex your knees, and stay centered throughout your swing. The key to hitting a three wood stinger is to try not to shift your weight onto your back foot while you take the club back. Try to limit lateral movement and bow your left wrist during the downswing and throughout impact. This can be a difficult shot to master, so it might take several tries but you will find that it is worth all of that practice.
