Hitting Against the Grain

Problem

The ball is lying down in tall grass that is growing towards you, against your target line.

Cure

You will lose distance because you have to hit against the grain of the rough. Take the club that you normally would from this distance. If you try to take a longer club, then you will lose the necessary loft to help hit the ball out of the tall grass. If you decide to take a more lofted club, keep in mind that the tall grass will naturally close the clubface, thus causing it to delofting the club and eliminating the backspin you would normally expect with the selected club.

Therapy

Aim to the right of the pin. Stand a little taller and place the ball a little further back in your stance for a steeper, descending blow. Keep your hands ahead of the ball so the club feels as if it is trailing behind your hands as you take your forward swing. Make sure you get the club down onto the ball sharply to help reduce how much the grass can penetrate the grooves of the clubface.
