Tip From the Archives

Hit From a Powderly Lie

Problem

Your ball is in or surrounded by pine needles, twigs, leaves, or dirt. Remember, you cannot move the ball without taking a penalty. If you remove anything from under the ball and it moves, you need to replace the ball and add a on a stroke before even taking the shot.

Cure

Remove as much debris from above and around the ball. Error on the side of caution, it is better to leave a little more than necessary than risking that you will move the ball and add on another stroke.

Therapy

Use a lofted club, play the ball off of your back foot, and try to place most of your weight on your forward foot. To avoid the debris as much as possible, you should take a steeply descending blow with your hands ahead of the ball throughout the entire swing.
