Hip Delay for Power

Problem

You want hit your long irons further and more consistently.

Cure

Many players force their hips into turning as soon as they start their backswing causing inconsistency and a loss of power. Do not overlook the power that can be gained from simply setting up correctly to the ball. A large amount of power comes from having a straight spine and a slight knee flex. With this set up, you will be able to make a larger and easier flowing swing.

Therapy

Focus on keeping your hips and legs quite as you take the club back. Once you have already started your shoulder turn and are approaching the top of the swing, you should naturally feel a need to turn your hips. This is when you should turn them. So if you keep your hips still at the beginning of your swing, you will notice that you can actually coil your arms and shoulders much easier. Once you have this coil, your hips will move naturally into the top of the swing.
