Hip Check

Problem

You have the feeling that you are losing power in your swing.

Cure

Check your hips to make sure that you are not losing power by moving them towards the ball because you should be moving your hips towards the target and not the ball. The hips should be the same distance from the ball during the forward swing as they were during the backswing. If your hips are moving towards the ball, it changes your spine angle and hinders your swing path for returning the clubface to the ball, thus reducing speed.

Therapy

To check to see if you are losing power by turning your hips towards the ball, try swinging against a golf bag or post. Set up to the ball so your bottom is lightly pressing against the bag. Part of your bottom should remain in contact with the post throughout the entire swing. When you have completed the backswing, the trailing side of your bottom should be touching the bag. When you have completed the forward swing, the target side of your bottom should be touching the bag.

Does a short compact swing make a difference?

I do not think the size of the swing matters when it comes to moving towards the ball. It needs to be avoided during any swing. Of course, you will not notice as much butt movement against the bag with your L-wedge as you would with your 3 iron because you are making a smaller swing.
