Hinge for Distance

Problem

You are having difficulty releasing the golf club and gaining the distance you need.

Cure

Relearn what a good wrist hinge feels like so you can utilize it on the tee box.

Therapy

Hold a couple of clubs in your hands and hold your arms out in front of you. Allow your upper arms to rest against your chest as you do this. Now simply hinge your wrists up so the shaft is pointing towards the sky. Notice how you mostly feel the pressure in your wrists while doing this drill. This is the feeling you want to establish at the top of your swing.

Hinge your right wrist, yes but that along won’t help because most golfers “smother” the release by extending their right forearm and elbow across their chest and down the line. Where’s the release? You release the wrists by halting the forward motion of your right elbow at the right hip. From there not only will your elbow and wrist unhinge but your club head will square up. This simple move doesn’t come easy because we all want to add whatever’s left in the swing with our arms. WRONG! Let the hinges release, if you trying to add late power with the arms your putting on the breaks.
