Tip From the Archives
Highest Scorer
Problem
You play with more experienced players and have the strokes on your scorecard.
Cure
Due to the fact that more than half of your strokes occur around the putting green, you need to start improving your short game. If you can ace your short game, it will make up for any shortcomings with your long game.
Therapy
Luckily, even when you are at home you can still work on your putting skills. Keep in mind that the higher your shots, the less control you will have over the ball. So, practice making low running shots around the green. As you practice, start on the green and work your way up to making full swing shots. If you do not have enough time for a full practice time at the range, at least schedule enough time to utilize the practice green for both putting and low shots near the green.
there is no doubt that once we have got the distance bug out of our systems, that the short game is what lowers scores. On a par 5, can guarantee 4xPW's from tee to green,to be on the green and in putting territory! It is not how it is how many!
My duaghter is a less experienced golfer than I but has a good swing. She only plays three or four times a year but plays in the 90s. She is deadly at lower running shot and scores from some amazing places. On her high school team they taught her to just get it to the fringe and then let the ball roll to the hole. She also uses a three wood for tee shots and then plays a 7 iron for the shorter shots. She boggies or pars a lot of holes this way.
I had a harder time learning how to control my bump and run style shots. Once I did, it lowered my score dramatically. What is great about this shot, is that I could practice it in the winter in my hallway. Putting and low shots are great to work on inside while waiting for spring to come around.
