Tip From the Archives

High Lofted Wedge

Problem

You want to control the distance of your high wedge shots.

Cure

The length of your backswing will determine the distance of the ball flight. So, do not take the club back as far as usual if you do not want the ball to go as far.

Therapy

Higher lofted iron shots require a more powerful swing for distance but are easier to hit it fat or thin. When using a high lofted wedge, hit it well by taking a narrow stance with the ball centered between your feet. During your backswing, the club should only go about chest high and the forward swing should complete a full finish with your hands reaching above your shoulders. Remember, the backswing determines the length not the forward swing, so always make a full finish to ensure the ball carries to the proper distance.

At the range on Tuesday. I could have taken on Mickelson or Woods with my wedges. Stance etc as above. What made the results so special, was the early cocking of the wrists in the backswing, a shoulder turn (it is too easy just to use the arms and not the body at all, with inconsistent results) together with an accellerating clubhead through the ball. The last 20 balls peppered the pin striking it at least 5 times with the Lob Wedge (65yds).It was effortless, robotic high mortar round type trajectories. I concentrated on keeping my eyes looking at where the ball had been until the ball was long gone and at the peak of it's parabolic arc. Sheer bliss at the results. [First trip to the range this year, as the weather gets warmer and Winter starts to fade here in, Dalian,North East China]
