High Finish

Problem

You try to finish high during your follow through and notice that you suffer from a flying left elbow, if you are right handed. This can cause you to hit the ball with the heel of the club, hit the ball thin, or see pushed shots because you are squaring the clubface with your body instead of your hands and arms.

Cure

Instead of focusing on achieving a high finish, you want to finish with the elbow of your leading arm folded down. If you are able to do this with a relaxed swing, then you should have proper speed, contact, and balance.

Therapy

To help ensure a proper release to help square the clubface easily, you want your follow through to be a mirror image of your backswing. During your backswing, your trailing arm will fold as your forward arm is extended straight. When you take your follow through, your forward arm folds down as your trailing arm extends straight. Practice swinging the club several times while focusing on your elbows folding. A good drill to help practice squaring the club at impact is to try pulling the club back after impact. This is because this motion will cause you to fold your forward arm quickly.
