Heeling and Blocking

Problem

Hitting off of the heel of the club with your woods. Pushing or slicing your irons due to a blocking action with your irons.

Cure

It is likely that you are trying to pull the club down for a shallower forward swing. This could cause you to block your irons because it can delay the rotation of your wrists. You need to avoid forcefully pulling the club downwards with your hands by allowing your lower body to start the downswing by turning your forward hip towards the target. Once you do, your arms, hands, and club will follow.

Therapy

One way to see if it is your hands that is leading your downswing is to check where your elbow on your trailing arm is located at the top of your swing. If it is shoved into your back hip, then this indicates that you are aggressively pulling the club down with your hands. To help prevent the blocking action during your downswing, make sure that you do not let your entire body to move laterally into the shot and remember to allow your forward forearm to rotate. Your forward hip should turn towards the target to help clear the way for the sweet spot of the clubface to make flush contact with the center of the ball.
