Tip From the Archives

Head Behind

Problem

You focus on keeping your head perfectly still, down, or your eyes on the ball. Your head moves forward during the downswing and causes a weak shot or a pulled slice.

Cure

You need to allow a little head movement during your swing. Focus on keeping your head a little behind the ball.

Therapy

Set up with your head behind the ball and keep it that way throughout the swing. You should expect your head to move away from the target and downwards anywhere from an inch to four inches during your swing. Due to your forward shoulder moving up and the back shoulder moving down, it will cause your neck to move your head a little away from the target during the backswing. As you start the downswing, you will still see your head moving this direction a little more and downwards.

Probably the single most important swing thought I've learned in my decade of playing golf. This gem has added more consistency and power than any club I could buy.
