Head Back

Problem

You are more successful with your irons than when using your woods. This is because when you use the irons, you use a more descending blow but when you are using your woods with this same swing style, you lose all of your power and speed into the ground.

Cure

You need to take a shallower swinging arch to help sweep the ball off of the ground to help ensure all of the speed and power is transferred into the ball instead of the ground. You want to release the club with a stronger and fuller arm extension when using longer clubs.

Therapy

A great way to encourage a sweeping motion when using your driver and woods is to keep your head back, behind the ball as your club moves from the top of your swing through the impact zone. You should notice your chin turning a little away from the target as you release your arms and trailing shoulder through the swing. This simple technique will also help encourage a greater arm extension and therefore distance. To help reinforce this sensation, have a friend hold a flagstick against the back of your head, standing a little behind you but out towards the target. Your friend should hold the flagstick across the back of your head up until the point of contact.
