Tip From the Archives
Hardpan Lie
Problem
You need to pick the ball up cleanly off of the surface of the hardpan.
Cure
Avoid hitting hard or topping the ball. Limit your wrist cock by using a firm left wrist with your right arm leading the swing.
Therapy
Take a pitching wedge, limit your knee flex by standing taller than normal with a narrower stance, and bend at the waist. Make a three quarter swing with stiff wrists and allow the right arm to lead the swing though impact.
Whenever possible, I try to use a less lofted club off of hardpan. It's too easy to blade the shot with wedges, and the expectation of extra distance from a 6 or 7 iron will reinforce the idea of an easier, controlled swing.
