Hard or Soft Swing

Problem

You need to decide between using two clubs. Your options are to hit a hard shorter iron or a soft longer iron.

Cure

You need to select a club and commit to the swing. Doubt in your club selection will only guarantee that you will mess this shot up. Trying to control the speed of your swing will increase the tension in your arms and prevent a natural clubhead release, resulting in poor contact with the ball.

Therapy

If you decide to control the power of your swing with one of the two clubs, make sure you take plenty of practice swings to help gauge how much power is needed to land at the desired location. Rather than trying to hit an iron with more or less power, make a full and fluid swing with the shorter club. If you feel that you will end up too close to landing in a hazard, then select the longer club and take a more compact backswing. Bring your arms and club through as your hands and wrists remain still to help prevent scooping the ball or hitting it fat. When you are confident in your club choice, focus on the target, and make a good swing, then you will end up in a much better position than you would have if you selected a harder or softer swing.
