Tip From the Archives

Gripping the End

Problem

You want to gain a few extra yards off of your tee shots.

Cure

Increase the length of your swing by gripping the end of the club for a little extra distance.

Therapy

Take a wider stance and tee the ball up a higher than usual. Grip the club so that the outer edge of the pinky of your top hand is flush with the end of the shaft of the club. With relaxed arms, slowly take the club back into a nice, smooth backswing. As you do, shift your body weight onto your back leg; so by the time you reach the top, all of your weight is on it. Allow your weight to shift with your swing as you turn forward, so that most of your body weight will then be on your front leg by the time you complete your follow through. In addition to taking a wider stance, a little foot flare on your back leg will help turn your hips even more.
