Tip From the Archives
Greenside Thick Rough
Problem
The ball is lying deep in the rough and the pin is very close to the fringe.
Cure
Do not try to make this shot any more difficult than it already is by adding spin on the ball. This will keep the clubface open in the grass and the thick rough will catch and turn the clubhead.
Therapy
Use an open stance, a square clubhead, and a firm grip on the club. Avoid using a club with a lot of bounce. Keep this swing simple by playing it a lot like you would a sand shot. Even if you hit a little behind the ball it is okay as long as you have a steep enough swing and constant acceleration to free the ball. Cock wrist early during your backswing and make sure to make a full release of the clubhead down, into the ball. Remember that the deeper the ball is sitting in the grass, the more you will need to move the ball back in your stance. Just make sure you do not move it past your trailing foot.
