Tip From the Archives

Greenside Cut Shot

Problem

There is a hazard or an obstacle blocking a clear shot to the green.

Cure

Try playing a high, cut shot with a lob or a sand wedge for a soft landing and limited roll.

Therapy

Place the ball forward in your stance. Aim the clubface one to two feet to the right of the pin as you aim your body about ten feet towards the left of it. Focus on making a long and smooth backswing as you slowly take the club back. To help establish a cut spin on the ball with stopping power, you will need to allow your forward swing to pass along the alignment of your feet. You should feel as if you are cutting the clubface under the ball with your trailing hand as you accelerate your arms through impact.
