Tip From the Archives
Gradually Accelerate for a Better Swing
Problem
Swinging too hard will cause a bad transition from the top of your swing and will lead to poor timing and inconsistency.
Cure
You need to find the proper rhythm and smooth transition for every club in your bag. Avoid swinging too hard immediately during your backswing; try instead to gradually accelerate throughout your swing so the fastest part of your swing is at impact or a little after.
Therapy
Notice how when you hold a wedge in your hand straight out in front of you and allow it to drop, that it naturally accelerates without any effort. Allow this to happen several times to help you feel how an effortless swing occurs and then bring your arms up higher so the club can drop further and therefore accelerate more. You need your swing to become virtually effortless by allowing yourself to gradually accelerate starting from your backswing all the way past impact. As you do this, keep in mind the natural timing the club had as you dropped it and allow yourself to accelerate down and through a little more each time you practice.
