Golf Ball Compression

Problem

You find yourself wondering, what does golf ball compression mean? How should you find the right compression for your swing?

Cure

Compression listed on golf ball boxes is a way of indicating how soft the ball is. The lower the number, the softer the ball and the more the ball will squish or compress upon impact. Usually the softest balls are around 70.

Therapy

Players with a faster swing speed are able to compress the ball easier and therefore do not need a softer ball. In contrast, players with slower swing speeds and females often prefer a softer ball to allow them to gain the compression that they normally would not be able to achieve with a harder ball. So the slower your swing, the lower number you should look for compression when selecting a package of golf balls. Shorter players often select balls with a 70 or 80 compression rating. Average recreational golfers that hit 250 yards or less off of the tee box tend to select 90 compression balls. Professional golfers or players with fast swing speeds usually select golf balls with the compression of 100 or 110.
