Full or Compacted Wedge

Problem

You are about 125 yards from the pin but are unsure if you should use a full or compacted wedge shot.

Cure

Keep in mind that a full wedge shot is easier to hit than a three-quarter or half wedge shot. If you select too long of a wedge and fail to take a short enough swing, it could leave your ball lying past the green.

Therapy

Ideally, you should choose a wedge that will give you the desired distance, using a full swing. However, if you need to add some backspin, try to land the ball to the right of the flag with a little right to left drawspin. To achieve this, use a pitching wedge or a 9 iron. Place the ball an inch back in your stance and aim a few feet right of the flag. Take a powerful but compacted backswing. Make sure you release fully at impact.
