Tip From the Archives
From the Hole
Problem
You have a hard time visualizing how the ball will roll into the cup on long putts.
Cure
Instead of thinking about how to get the ball to the hole, picture how the ball would roll if it is coming from the cup to your ball location.
Therapy
While practicing, lay your putter on the green perpendicular to your putting line. Walk to the other side of the hole. Squat down behind the cup and look at your putter and see how level the putter looks compared to where you are. Now visualize the ball coming out of the hole and rolling back to the putter. Look to see if there is any bumps or dips points around the hole. How would the ball roll along this area and enter the cup if this put was only 4 feet away? Would it roll to the right or left? Now expand your focus to the halfway point between your ball and the cup. Look to see any high or low points between this location and the hole. Walk a few feet to the right or left of your line and determine the roll from the halfway mark to the cup. Continue walking to your ball and only take note of the major hills and valleys. This is because the faster the ball is rolling; the less likely the break will affect the roll. So, it is most important to notice the finer details near the cup and the major details the closer you are to your ball.
