Tip From the Archives

Fried Egg Punch

Problem

The ball landed in the sand bunker and about half of it is visible. You want to see the ball run on the green without much spin.

Cure

Try making a sand punch shot to help get the ball out of the bunker.

Therapy

Set the ball just ahead of the inside of your trailing foot. Toe the club by leaning the shaft of the club forward and towards the ball more than usual. Although you want plenty of roll, you will still need to take a steep swing down into the sand in order to get the ball out of the half buried lie. Make an aggressive swing and plan on entering the sand just behind the ball.

Whaddya mean by 'Toe the club'?

You want the toe of the club setting a little lower than the heel to help it dig into the sand more. It is almost as if you are trying to use the corner of the toe to help start the digging action like a shovel. We edited the tip to clarify it.

Toe-ing the club is a good idea also when trying to "dig" a ball out of lush rough.
