Tip From the Archives
Fly Far and Land Quick
Problem
You want to hit a slight draw with a 3 or a 5 iron off of the tee but you need the ball to stop quickly with limited roll.
Cure
Place a little extra drawspin onto the ball so that it gives you a little added distance and stops quickly.
Therapy
Tee the ball a little higher than you normally would when using irons. Although you are using a long iron, it is very important that you avoid trying to hit the ball too hard because this will only produce tension and cause you to open the clubface before impact. Keeping your arms and hands relaxed is critical to achieving this shot so you are able to swing freely. You can then powerfully snap the clubhead through in time to square the clubhead and gain the drawspin you desire. Be careful during your downswing, if you allow too much head movement then you will deloft the clubface see a worm burner.
