Flop Chip

Problem

You are usually unsuccessful at chipping due to excessive wrist movements.

Cure

Naturally, you want to work on your chipping. However, until you do, try a soft lob shot or a flop chip that allows more wrist action and less arm and shoulder movement.

Therapy

Set up for extra loft by placing your hands behind the ball and open the clubface. Your wrist on your forward arm should be bent while the trailing arm is straight. The length of your backswing will determine the distance. However, it is unlikely that you will want to take the club back all the way into a full backswing and be sure that your shoulder turn does not exceed seventy degrees to the right. Keep your arms straight as you hit down on the ball and allow the loft of the club to get the ball up into the air. Because you set up with your hands behind the ball, the clubhead will release early and allow your trailing hand to turn over your forward hand. Your hands will continue to turn as you take a waist high follow through and the button on your pants should be square to the target.
