Tip From the Archives
Firm Wrists
Problem
You top the ball, hit it thin or fat when chipping due to an excessive wrist action. You might even notice the back of your forward hand collapse during impact.
Cure
Avoid trying to help lift the ball up into the air because the loft of the club will do this for you. Keep your chipping action as simple as possible by keeping your wrists firm through impact.
Therapy
Place the majority of your weight onto your forward leg. Keep your hands and wrists relaxed but inactive as you take a short backswing. Make sure you only allow your body to turn a little as you take the club back. As you start your forward swing, allow your body to turn only a little, along with your knees moving towards the target. Keep your forward wrist firm as you move the clubhead into the ball. Your hands and clubface should be in the same position at contact as they were when you originally set up to the ball at address. To help ensure a sharp contact with the ball, your follow through should be short.
