Tip From the Archives

Feel Putter

Problem

You want to improve the feel in your putting.

Cure

Go to your local sporting goods store and try out different putters. Putters are designed with different inserts that can improve the feel in the putter and some can also decrease spin, skidding, or bounce on the green.

Therapy

Instead of gripping the club with the palm of your hands, grip it more with your fingertips. You have more sensitivity in your fingertips, so this change will help you gain better direction and feel for your putts. Keep in mind that the tighter you grip the club, the less feel you will have during the stroke.

what makes it bad?

This is exactly the opposite of what is advocated by Stan Utley, supposedly a putting guru. Utley is consulted by multiple PGA players. However, IMHO, whatever works is OK for putting. Witness the many unconventional grips, different putter styles, etc. on tour.
