Fat Pitch
Problem
You decelerate your swing during short shots or try to scoop the ball up while pitching, only to find that the ball flies short. Another possible cause of a fat pitch is that you are only shifting your hips and your upper body stays behind the ball; the club will then bottom out too soon for a thin or fat contact.
Cure
You need a sharp, descending blow in order to get the ball up into the air. Instead of concentrating on the back of the ball where you want to make contact, try focusing on the front of the ball while swinging through, this image should help you accelerate though the ball.
Therapy
Use your sand wedge for loft. Place the ball in the center of your stance. Lean your entire body towards the target so that your hands eyes are about one to two inches in front of the ball. This will also help displace your center of gravity forwards to help aid in a more downward blow. Take the club back halfway and swing through with your arms.
