Tip From the Archives
Eyes Closed Drill
Problem
You cannot seem to get a feel for your swing and you do not think it is because of stress.
Cure
Sometimes simply swinging the club with one hand will help you regain the feel of the club by placing all of the weight of the clubhead in one arm. Other times this lack of feel is from a visual stimuli. Eliminate this possible barrier by practicing hitting golf balls with your eyes closed.
Therapy
Tee up a ball and place a couple of balls in your pants pockets. Hit a ball as usual but do not leave from this position. Pull one ball out of your pocket and set it on the tee without losing your foot position or have a friend tee the ball for you. Close your eyes just before you begin your swing. This will allow you to feel how the clubhead is moving, the weight of the club and the speed of your body during the swing. By practicing this several times you will improve contact and awareness of your body and the club.
I have practiced this many times. When swinging too quickly or when "lifting" etc, etc. I now could quite confidently set up on the first tee on any course and hit the ball with my eyes closed.Knowing that it would be a great result.
The best place to develop a blind swing is at the driving range. I practice swinging at an empty 3" tee. I set myself up as I normally would. Once I am set. I close my eyes and start my swing. I listen for contact on the empty tee. As I progress through this exercise, the sound of stricking the tee begins to sound the same. Then place a ball on the tee and see what happens. This exercise works best if you are able to video tape yourself. You'd be surprise at what you see.
